Trip Introduction
Finally! After studying Japanese every year since Fall 2016, I am studying abroad. I will be in the city of Matsuyama at Ehime University, which is the sister city of Sacramento.
Matsuyama is a neat place. Famous for different things like oranges (mikan), sea bream fish (tai), fried fish paste (jakkoten), haiku, a book called Botchan, and others. It seems to be more popular for tourism among Japanese people as opposed to foreigners, and the people who live there are very friendly as I experienced in January. Matsuyama is mainly famous for that book, Botchan. The author, Natsume Souseki, wrote a story based on his experience teaching at a middle school in the city and failing to make friends. The book is comedic.
My schedule for studying abroad is as follows
9/18/24 -> Board flight to Narita International Airport
9/19/24 -> Arrive in Japan and stay at my classmate's apartment in Edogawa, Tokyo.
9/23/24 -> Fly to Matsuyama
9/24/24 -> Move into the Miyuki dorm (again)
10/~~/24-> Classes start
8/~~/25 -> Return home!
I will be part of the "Faculty of Collaborative Regional Innovation," which I don't quite understand. They don't have my major, recreation administration, over at Ehime University so I will be a "special auditor" who will be primarily studying Japanese language and culture. It's cool because I can pick and choose whichever class I want, I just need to figure out how to transfer it over at Sac State.
I will be taking 7 classes in the Fall semester for a total of 12 units, which will transfer over and complete my Japanese minor.
Why English? I wanted to try to ease in the full-Japanese experience as I aim for the JLPT N3 level language proficiency. Three of my professors are foreigners (one Dutch, one German, and one American).
